The move appears to be an attempt to prevent Imran's outfit PTI from becoming the single largest party in the National Assembly.
Speaking to journalists, Information Minister Atta Tarar on Monday said that under Article 17 of the Constitution, the government has the right to ban political parties, and this matter will be referred to the Supreme Court.
"PTI and Pakistan cannot co-exist," the minister said, adding that the decisions were taken in light of the former ruling party's involvement in the May 9 events and the PTI's former or current leaders' attempts to sabotage Pakistan's deal with the International (IMF).
