Police plans fall apart as traffic is thrown out of gear on Day 1

The century-old Sion road over bridge (ROB) was closed for demolition on Thursday after months of delay.

Despite planning by the Mumbai Traffic Police to minimise inconvenience, traffic chaos erupted from Thursday morning peak hours, affecting adjacent areas including Sion, Dharavi, Kurla and Bandra.

The disruption also extended to the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), Sion-Bandra Link Road and Mahim-Sion Link Road. Congestion in these areas was down in the evening, but motorists still faced inconvenience.

The Sion ROB is a crucial link between EEH and Lal Bahadur Shashtri Marg (LBS).

Any disruption at the ROB impacts traffic across these east-west routes. LBS Marg connects to the BKC Connector Bridge, where twowheelers are prohibited. As a result, two-wheeler riders, who previously used the Sion ROB, were forced to take detours, contributing to the heavy traffic on EEH.
