President Mohammed Shahabuddin later appointed Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed as the 25th chief justice of Bangladesh. Justice Ahmed, senior most judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court, was first appointed as judge of the Appellate Division and then appointed as chief justice, Law Secretary Md Golam Sarwar told The Daily Star.
Hassan revealed his decision around 1 pm after protestors gathered at the apex court premises, demanding the resignation of the chief justice, other judges "loyal to (Hasina's) Awami League" and a restructuring of the country's judiciary. The students had issued an ultimatum to him and other judges to resign by 1 pm.
He told journalists at the apex court premises that he has decided to resign considering the safety of the judges of the Supreme Court, High Court and lower courts across the country amid the emerging situation.
Meanwhile, the Law ministry took five decisions on Saturday, including a speedy trial of those responsible for killing people to quell the student and mass upsurge in July and August.
