Hundreds stranded by floods in central Greece

Touring the crisis-hit area of Thessaly, 185 miles north of Athens, Greece's prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, vowed to do "whatever is humanly possible" to assist people in areas deluged by torrential rain that also hit neighbouring Bulgaria and Turkey. A total of 23 people have died in the three countries since the onslaught began on Tuesday.

"I understand your anger and fury," Mitsotakis said yesterday. "Damages will be recorded immediately and those who have suffered will quickly see relief [from] the state." The Greek leader described the downpours, which saw more than a year's worth of rainfall dumped on central Greece in 24 hours, as the most powerful weather event the country had ever experienced.

Cars, buildings, bridges and roads have collapsed, or been washed away, with satellite imagery depicting vast tracts of the Greece's agricultural heartland submerged by muddy silt.
