After Spain's women won the World Cup on Sunday, Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish football federation, grabbed Hermoso by the head and pulled her towards him for a kiss on the lips.
The gesture triggered uproar. The acting minister of equality, Irene Montero, called it a "form of sexual violence" while the Netherlands-based players union Fifpro described it as "not appropriate or acceptable in any context". Hermoso said on a livestream after the incident that she "didn't like it", although in comments later provided to media she appeared to clarify her position, saying it was a "spontaneous mutual gesture".
Yesterday the acting prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, said Rubiales' gesture showed that Spain still had a long way to go on equality and women's rights.
