Judge Juan Merchan announced his decision moments after the ex-president appeared in his New York courtroom yesterday morning.
The decision means that the first of Trump's four criminal prosecutions to proceed to trial will be the case centred on years-old accusations that he had sought to bury stories about extramarital affairs that arose during his 2016 presidential campaign.
Merchan said he had issued a written ruling on Trump's attempt to throw out the case. "Defendant's motions to dismiss have been denied," he said, adding: "We're moving ahead to jury selection on March 25." Trump is also facing charges over plotting to overturn the 2020 election and keeping classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida.
His legal team fought the judge's scheduling decision, claiming it violated Trump's rights. Trump's attorney Todd Blanche said the classified documents case was expected to start in May. Trump could not possibly prepare for that trial, Blanche said, if he were present for the Manhattan case.
"That is a constitutional violation in our view," Blanche said.
