“We are not waiting on the Israelis. This is a moment for American leader ship,” a senior US offi cial said yesterday, refl ecting growing frustration at what is seen in Washington as Israeli obstruction of road deliveries on a substantial scale.
The port will be built in the next few weeks by US military engineers who will operat e from ships off the Gaza coast and will not need to step ashore, US offi cials said. The aid deliveries will be shipped from the port of Larnaca in Cyprus, which will become the main relief hub.
The project was expected to be formally announced by Joe Biden in his State of the Union speech last night. “This port, the main feature of which is a temporary pier, will provide the capacity for hundreds of additional truckloads of assistance each day,” the US offi cial said.
Biden’s announcement will be followed by a joint statement by the countries and humanitarian organisations involved in the sea corridor. One of the nations involved is the United Arab Emirates, but it is unclear whether it will off er troops to secure the aid bridgehead.
Israeli officials will be able to conduct inspections of the aid in Larnaca, according to administration officials . “We will coordinate with the Israelis on the security requirements on land and work with the UN and humanitarian NGOs on the distribution of assistance within Gaza,” a senior official said.
