Abernethy and Wright have the Midas touch

ANGELA Wright and Caroline Abernethy had a very good start when they played Jill Cansfield and Elizabeth Nodder. Everything they played turned to gold as they won the first set convincingly to love.

Elizabeth and Jill fought back well in the second set and managed to force a tie-break. This saw some great play from both sides and Angela and Caroline managed to come out on top. The third set saw another close game with Angela and Caroline winning this set too, and the match 6-0, 6-5, 6-3.

Alison Goodwin was still recovering from Covid and with sub Jen Kothari they unfortunately couldn’t hold back Roanna George and Katherine Rowe who won 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

Chris Janes and Andrew Leigh were slow starters when they played Chris Welland and Varun Philip and unfortunately for them by the time they got going in the third set it was too late as Chris and Varun took the points by winning 6-1, 6-1, 4-6.

Bob Verey and Andy Weymouth at last found some form and consistency to take their first win of the winter league over Mike Smith and Nick Souness. In a tough first set which went with serve, Bob and Andy took control of the tie break to take it.

The game was fairly tight with some long rallies and some incredible retrieves from Mike, but Bob and Andy’s more consistent play made sure they took the second set.

Unfortunately, Nick dislocated his shoulder at the end of the second set and although he valiantly carried on, he couldn’t really strike the ball and the third set went to Bob and Andy , who won overall 6-5, 6-3, 6-2.

Jon Jacobs and Ross Bunney were too strong for Lester Ellicott and Richard Turner as they won 6-0, 6-2, 6-2.
