PROTESTS in Plymouth on Monday night turned violent, with items flung through the air and a police van damaged. A total of six arrests were made while several police officers sustained injuries.
Earlier in the evening, officers donning helmets were separating the anti-fascist group from the 'Stop the Boats' group, as chants were shouted back-and-forthIt came after police issued warnings to ensure there was no repeat of the violent responses across other parts of the country.
Plymouth City Council leader Tudor Evans said he was disappointed at the news that organisers like former EDL leader Tommy Robinson has now put Plymouth on his list of places for a 'Stop the Boats' protest. To date, these protests have degenerated into violent disorder in numerous towns and cities, including Rotherham, Sunderland, Leeds, Bristol, Stoke on Trent, Manchester and Blackpool.
The city's 'Stand Up To Racism' demo began peacefully at around 6pm, but by around 7.30pm the 'Stop the Boats' protest was well underway and the groups clashed.
