Brixham capitalise on players missing for Yelverton

C WEST DIVISION

Yelverton officials had so many players missing from what would have been a competitive side they asked if they could concede the game but honour their 2nd and 3rd XI fixtures instead.

As league rules threaten all sorts of points-penalty punishments for prioritising lower-level games ahead of 1st XI matches, Yelverton reluctantly fulfilled the game at Brixham and cancelled the thirdteam match against Buckfastleigh.

Martin Goff (15) and Ben Gove (16), two of the 1st XI players who were available, made the only scores of note in Yelverton’s total of 60 all out.

Five batters did not make a run between them; two more managed a single each.

Mike Barron (27no) and Tom Hopper (17) were the not-out batters when Brixham won the game in the 10th over.

Yelverton stay second from bottom in the C West table. They are 18 points from safety with four games left to do something about it.

CORNWOOD 2nd XI thrashed Plymouth 2nd XI by 222 runs to leave the city side rock bottom in the C Division West.

Opener Josh Goodliffe rattledup a career best 119 – bettering the 104 he made against Ashburton last season – as Cornwood raced along to 335 all out.

Goodliffe and skipper Robin Dart (78) put on a hefty 218 for the first wicket. Azir Rahmanzai (3-56) finally split them up.

Cornwood’s wickets in hand were used up in the late dash for runs. Dan Rogers (2-57) and James Hulbert (3-56) both benefited.

Plymouth, now 26 points away from safety in the basement, were bundled out for 113.

The top order collectively downed tools in a running total of 27 for seven as Harry Woolway (4-21) and Alex Shutt (3-24) picked them off.

Iain Cunningham (42), supported by tail-enders Rahmanzai (17no) and Dan Luffman (12) made the scoreline a little less embarrassing.
