Plymouth Crown Court heard how he had made various stops in the city, including the train station and negotiating North Cross Roundabout before he travelled along Western Approach at around 6.20pm.
He then headed towards the traffic light controlled pedestrian crossing near the Sainsbury's store entrance.
The light crossing was on red and, at the time, Mumford, from Ladysmith Road in Plymouth, had a piece of paper in his hand.
