A SHORT film has been created to celebrate the centenary of a camp on a former military site which was established to given inner-city children a taste of life in the countryside.
Maker Camp first welcomed children to Maker Heights in 1923 after use of the site was negotiated with the War Office by Lady Astor – the first female MP to take her seat in the House of Commons.
Children, many from deprived parts of Plymouth, were housed in soldiers’ barracks and ate at a canteen on a parade ground, as well as walking to beaches at Kingsand and Cawsand and taking part in classes in art, nature discovery or sailing.
