Experts believe we have seen the best and worse of Argyle

SKY Sports pundits David Prutton and Andy Hinchcliffe have discussed ‘the good and bad’ of Plymouth Argyle under Wayne Rooney at the start of the 2024/25 Championship campaign.

Rooney’s reign as the Pilgrims’ boss began with a season-opening 4-0 defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday and they then had back-to-back 1-1 draws, at home to Hull City and away to Queens Park Rangers, before losing 1-0 to visiting Stoke City last time out.

Now, after the first international break of the campaign, Argyle will return to Championship action at home to early pacesetters Sunderland tomorrow. Prutton and Hinchcliffe spoke about Rooney and the Pilgrims on the latest Essential EFL podcast.

Prutton said: “We saw the QPR game, a game they were well involved in and completely shot themselves in the foot. You could see the frustration on Wayne Rooney’s face as one of his more experienced players, Adam Forshaw, steams in and gets a second yellow card after half-an-hour.

“He can’t mitigate for that. It was a disastrous start to the season with that performance and result against Wednesday. It’s a team that has changed, of course. You look at the managerial appointments towards the end of last season, which quite categorically didn’t work out.
