Four seasons in one day as Haley and Crutchley prevail
The Herald|December 07, 2023
DESPITE the great British weather throwing torrential rain, pelting hail then finally finishing with blinding sun, Fiona Crutchley and Nick Haley and Debbie Wilson and Jose Rojas battled on to get their match played.
DAVE AND SULEGALE
Four seasons in one day as Haley and Crutchley prevail

Despite fantastic serving from Jose, Nick’s slice proved too much for Jose and Debbie as Nick and Fiona won 6-0, 6-2, 6-2.

Dave Gale and Sue Newberry capitalised on a slow start from Jose Rojas and Debbie Wilson and won the first set with good positional serving from Dave and strong groundshots from Sue.

Debbie and Jose fought back well in the second set but couldn’t do enough to win it. In the final set, Jose’s serve started to cause the expected damage and he and Debbie went 4-1 up.

Dave and Sue hung in there and clawed back a couple more games. Dave and Sue won 6-3, 6-3, 3-6.

Dave Bate and Nicky Slight came out 6-0, 6-4, 6-1 winners against Ming Dai and Pam Ellis, while Linda Trebilcock and Hilary Picton were clinical in Ladies A in beating Ann Short and Julia Whetton 6-2, 6-0, 6-0.

Despite great cross court rallies, Nicky Trevaskis and Fiona Crutchley were too strong for Nicky Slight and Jessica Randell, beating them 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

Lyn Helliwell and Alison Miles and Luisa Warring and Sandra O’Sullivan all played well but it was Lyn and Alison who went on to win 6-5, 2-6, 6-5.

Excellent serving from Roanna George helped by some volleying from Katherine Rowe helped win the match 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 against Sue Gale and Sue Newberry.

The two Sues then played the next day against Lyn Hellliwell and Alison Miles, who took the first set.
