George Eustice, who until last September was secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs, is urging ministers to rethink plans that would see rural and off-grid homes switch to heat pumps.
The plan has emerged as a source of concern among some Tory MPs and is the latest green issue some Conservatives have urged ministers to reconsider.
It comes amid concerns among some campaigners and environmental activists, as well as some Conservative politicians, that Rishi Sunak is less committed to net zero policies than his predecessors.
Mr Eustice, speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, urged the Government to look again at the push to get rural homeowners to convert to heat pumps.
