Hunt for a new laureate to champion city

WORDSMITHS URGED TO APPLY TO TAKE OVER FROM WRITER LAURA

THE search is on to find the next Plymouth Laureate of Words. Playwright Laura Horton is coming to the end of her three-year stint and a successor is sought.

Creative writing organisation Literature Works is organising the quest and wants suitable candidates to apply before 5pm on Monday, July 17.

Writers of any genre - with the exception of journalism and pure non-fiction - can apply provided they are aged at least 20, live in Plymouth and are confident reading their work and engaging with audiences in public.

A Literature Works spokesperson said: "Plymouth has a rich history of literary connections and a burgeoning literature scene with a variety of writing groups and a welcoming community of live readers and performers.

"Following Laura Horton's successful term in the role, we're seeking the next exciting talent to take up the prestigious role of Plymouth's Laureate of Words for 2023/25."

The role was created in 2013 with the late Michael Sullivan being the first laureate. He was followed by Thom Boulton, in 2016, with Laura becoming the first non-poet to take the post in 2020.
