IN a clash of the titans, Mannamead A took on defending champions Tavistock A in Division One and gained revenge for a defeat in the final match of last season.
Mannamead get their revenge on champions Tavi

MEN

Solid tennis was played by all the pairs and they were tied at one all after the first two matches. The competition really heated up in the second round with Tavy’s first pair of Rhys Dunsford and Nick Beilby closing out a hard-fought set with a break of serve in the final game.

Mannamead’s second pair of Tom Pantling and Chris Welland turned around their first set from 5-3 down to claim a 7-5 win. Tom and Chris managed to cruise to victory 6-2 in their final set, with Mannamead’s first pair, Matt Bowers and Dan Chadder, taking their match to a championship tie-break which would ultimately decide which team left with victory.

Mannamead took an early lead of 3-0, but Tavistock responded strongly to level the tie-break. At 6-6, Mannamead upped their game forcing errors from the other side to set up three match points.

Tavistock once again fought back with some gutsy tennis, to take the tie-break score to 9-8. A netted forehand from Tavistock handed the tiebreak to Mannamead, which resulted in a 57-38 win for Mannamead.

Hill Lane A’s Jack Allman and Thomas McLellan were taken to three sets by both St Budeaux pairs and won one and lost one as Hill Lane lost 62-29.

In Division 2, a slow start from Andy Weymouth and Jim Aird for Yelverton, playing in their first match together, improved to allow them to beat Richard Holman and Stewart Barnes of Newton and Noss and give hope for Yelverton.

However, in their second match, Jason Vosper and Yuen Siu held their nerve in the championship tie-break to clinch a 58-35 victory for Newton & Noss A.

Hill Lane B played St Budeaux B with the away side being too strong for Hill Lane winning 72-24.
