A CORNISHMAN who became the first ever recipient of the Victoria Cross for service in New Zealand has been commemorated on the 150th anniversary of his death.
A special event held in Saltash saw attendees stirred to song to honour the enduring legacy of William Odgers, a significant figure in the town’s history.
One hundred and fifty years after his passing, the event organised by Saltash resident Barry Brooking served as a poignant reminder of Odgers’ remarkable contribution during the New Zealand Wars.
The gathering embraced the essence of the moment, even resonating with the melodies of a graveside traditional sea shanty, emotionally sang by Roger Smith, evoking the maritime spirit that coloured Odgers’ life.
The humble yet meaningful ceremony at Odgers’ resting place in St.Stephen’s Churchyard paid homage to one of few proud Cornishmen bestowed with the prestigious Victoria Cross.
