FUNDING from the decision to axe the HS2 railway line will be reallocated to ensure the Tavistock to Bere Alston line can reopen, it has been announced. It will mean that Tavistock railway station is set to see trains return for the first time since 1968.
PM Rishi Sunak said £36billion previously ring-fenced for the high-speed rail line from London to Manchester would instead be allocated to infrastructure projects in other parts of the country. Devon is set to benefit from that reallocation with the Tavistock to Bere Alston scheme is among those listed.
The announcement issued by the Department for Transport included plans to open a railway line between Cullompton and Wellington, and setting aside funding to complete the South West Resilience Programme in full, making the vital route between Exeter and Plymouth via Dawlish more resilient in the face of extreme weather.
