HEAD PLYMOUTH & DISTRICT SUMMER LEAGUE
Given the importance of the match to Tavistock’s hopes of winning the men’s Division 1 title for the first time in some years, there was an enthusiastic group of spectators to watch Tavy A play Mannamead A. The spectators cheered both teams as they produced some stunning tennis. There were three championship tie breaks which were all won by Tavy 10-8. This gave them the win 67-37 to take the Division 1 title. Sportingly, the Mannamead team stayed after a late finish under the floodlights to share a glass of bubbly and toast the new league champions.
Ivybridge B, for the fifth occasion this year, only fielded one pair and lost 14-72 to St Budeaux A and will finish bottom and be relegated from Division 1.
Ivybridge A didn’t fare much better, losing to Devonshire A 26-68 and will get an 18 point deduction for a late scoresheet.
In Division 2, St Budeaux B beat Newton/Noss A 62-33.
Hill Lane A won at Plympton A 1572 to clinch Division 2 and promotion to the top tier next season.
Only one Mannamead pair was available for their C team in Division 3, and they were a bit rusty, losing to Plympton A 16-72.
St Budeaux C lost to Yelverton A 9-72.
Devonshire B and Ivybridge C contested a very close fixture with some good tennis being played in all the matches. A fantastic comeback from Reece Mottershead and Damian Heard of Devonshire to clinch the first set tie break, which helped Devonshire B win 60-30 and this was enough to win Division 4.
Also in Division 4, Plymstock A beat Tavistock C 70-26, which was enough to give Plymstock A second place and promotion.
