Travellers enter sports field and alarm local residents

RESIDENTS are becoming increasingly concerned after the number of Travellers who have set up camp at a Plymstock playing field increased over the Bank Holiday Weekend despite the group having been handed a 24-hour Notice to Quit last week.

Initially, around 15 caravans arrived at the public playing field off Haye Road which borders Elburton and the new multi-million pound housing development of Sherford last Wednesday evening and into the following day. A metal bollard appeared to have been removed, granting access to the fields, and the caravans were accompanied by vans, cars, trucks, as well as dogs and even a horse, as the Travellers initially set themselves up around the western edge of the rugby fields, with a handful of others in the middle section close to homes in Henry Avent Gardens.

Another gap appeared in the car park which allowed smaller vehicles, such as the Travellers' cars and vans, to gain access to the fields as well as to allow them to freely come and go.
