A PLYMOUTH charity has warned of a worrying rise in the number of animals being neglected or abandoned as owners struggle to pay for veterinary care.
Woodside Animal Welfare Shelter at Elfordleigh is currently caring for dozens of animals that have arrived malnourished, neglected or with medical conditions in need of urgent treatment. It believes financial pressures and the cost of veterinary care is behind the increase in abandonment and neglect. It is urging owners struggling to care for their animals to get in touch before the situation deteriorates.
Across the UK, the RSPCA has reported a year-on-year increase in reports of animals being abandoned, with a 30% rise in calls in three years. For animals who arrive at Woodside neglected or abandoned, staff say the care they need to help them recover can take weeks or even months.
