Yellow Peril returns to challenge the Fossils

THE Yellow Peril reared itself on Thursday to bring a degree of concentration to the proceedings.

With the ball worth double it was essential the ball remained in play throughout the full 18. Two scores to count from each team of three saw 16 teams taking part but eight players opted out to play in the Summer Knockout, more later.

Prior to the first tee there was much discussion about the strategy each team would adopt especially as quite a large number of players now receive two shots on several holes, others had aquaphobia and some a tendency to slice.

Now with the continuing fine weather the course continued to play hard and fast but this week the greens presented a changing challenge. Overnight rain or watering slowed the putts for the early starters and the greens only received their short back and sides while the players were on the course which altered the speed of the greens which otherwise looked fantastic.

The earliest confirmed lost yellow ball was on the second, ironically by Capt. Ian Edwards’ team after his earlier warnings to the players, but one fortunate team almost managed it on the first but thanks to a team member’s laser eyesight it remained in play for the full 18. Seven balls out of 16 were consigned to the course which Captain Ian Edwards admitted was about the average loss expected when playing the Yellow Peril, although one was eventually handed in by a following group.
