AHEAD of the centenary celebrations of 1924 Congress session held in Belagavi, which is scheduled for December last week, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar visited Veerasoudha, the site of the historic session and Gandhi Bhavan in Piranwadi in the city to review the preparations on Monday.
The mega event is expected to be held on December 26 and 27 as the Congress session was held on December 26 a century ago in Belagavi. A series of events are being planned by the government for the next one year and year-long centenary celebrations will be held until October 2, 2025.
Shivakumar also visited Gangadhar Rao Deshpande Memorial at Ramteerth Nagar. Deshpande had played a major role in organising the historic session. According to sources, the Congress is planning to hold a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting at Gandhi Bhavan in the city on December 26. Shivakumar said that most of the places where Gandhiji visited during the freedom struggle in Karnataka will be developed. Several party leaders including Laxmi Hebbalkar, Asif Sait and former MLA Anjali Nimbalkar accompanied Shivakumar.
AFTER unveiling of a portrait of Anubhava Mantapa, the first seat of democracy, the parliament, that was established in the 12th century by Basavanna, here in the Suvarna Soudha, members across the party line recalled the efforts made by Basavanna and others to create an equal, casteless society.
