COMING down hard on the alleged negligence and callous attitude of the authorities concerned in preventing the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, the Madras High Court on Friday grilled the Tamil Nadu government on the action taken since the last such incident in 2023, to prevent the recurrence of similar tragedies that snuff out the lives of the poor.

A division bench of Justices D Krishnakumar and K Kumaresh Babu, while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by AIADMK advocate IS Inbadurai, seeking a CBI probe into the matter, posed several questions to the Advocate General P S Raman who appeared for the state.

"This incident cannot be taken very lightly. It is about the lives of poor people. All that we want to know is, have you not learned a lesson from the last time," it asked, referring to the illicit arrack tragedy that took place in Villupuram and Chengalpattu last year that claimed 22 lives.
