<p><strong>Hyderabad:&nbsp;</strong>While the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is spending over Rs 75 crore in constructing new model foot over bridges (FOBs) across the city, lack of maintenance has left several existing ones defunct.</p>
<p>For instance, escalators and lifts at the two FOBs at Banjara Hills Road Number 2 have been defunct for months. &ldquo;My wife and I suffer from arthritis. We would rather walk towards the Srinagar Colony signal which is around half a kilometre from the nearby FOB to cross the road than climb these stairs. The FOBs on this road are useless to us,&rdquo; Kunisetty Raghu, a 72-year-old senior citizen, rues.</p>

<p id="2">Apart from Banjara Hills, the ones at Muffakam Jah College, Tourism Plaza, Inorbit Mall and near Biodiversity flyover at Gachibowli are also defunct with escalators and lifts not functioning.</p>
<p id="3">Mohammed Rasool, a 66year-old senior citizen resident living in Vijaya Nagar Colony near NMDC, says a lift and an escalator were proposed at the FOB near NMDC. &ldquo;But, nothing came of it. This stretch is one of the busiest link roads between the city and the RGI Airport and an FOB is the only option for pedestrians,&rdquo; Rasool said.</p>
<p>Civic activists said GHMC should take action against erring agencies for failing to maintain the FOBs. &ldquo;Some of the mentioned FOBs are supposed to be maintained by the advertisement agencies contracted by GHMC under build, operate and transfer model. They make around Rs 5 lakh per month from the ad space but do not invest in their maintenance,&rdquo; civic activist Harish Daga said.</p>

<p id="2">The civic body is investing Rs 75.65 crore to build 22 FOBs across the city. While eight of them have been operationalised, work on the others is in progress. The most recent one was launched near ESI Hospital at Erragadda at a cost of Rs 5 crore earlier this month.</p>
