Chennai:&nbsp;Teenage footballer Priya R died of multi-organ failure Tuesday morning following complications from a botched surgery to fix a painful ligament at a government hospital in Chennai on November 7 that led to two follow-up operations and amputation of her right leg above the knee.

The 18-year-old student of Queen Mary&rsquo;s College in Chennai had arthroscopy surgery at Periyar Nagar Government Peripheral Hospital in the city.
The hospital&rsquo;s casualty medical officer Dr K Somasundar and assistant professor of orthopaedics Dr A Paul Ram Sankar were suspended for &ldquo;medical negligence&rdquo;. Priya&rsquo;s friends and relatives demanded their arrest.
Tamil Nadu health minister Ma Subramanian announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to Priya&rsquo;s family and a government job for one of her three brothers. &ldquo;We will file a police complaint and initiate action for the careless post-surgical care,&rdquo; the minister said.
Priya&rsquo;s brother Lawrence said she had complained of pain in her legs hours after her surgery. &ldquo;I wish the doctors had taken her seriously. Complications from the surgery killed her.&rdquo;
When her condition worsened overnight, she was shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH). She went through two more surgeries&mdash;on November 9, when doctors amputated her right leg, and on Monday, when they removed &ldquo;some dead tissues&rdquo;.

&ldquo;The muscle breakdown spiked a protein called myoglobin in the urine. We found elevated creatinine levels causing renal failure. Slowly her liver and heart failed and her blood pressure dropped. Despite intensive care, including dialysis through the night, her condition deteriorated,&rdquo; said RGGGH dean Dr E Theranirajan. Doctors declared her dead at 7.15am.
Her mortal remains were given to the family after an autopsy and a case of unnatural death was registered.
Many people mourned the loss of a promising footballer, while opposition leader EK Palaniswami, state BJP president K Annamalai and AMMK&rsquo;s TTV Dhinakaran condoled the death and demanded compensation to the family.
