Citing visuals of a sleeping Aaftab in the lockup and police station CCTV footage leaks as examples, a former investigator, who had handled many high-profile cases, said, &ldquo;At a time when they have not even conclusively established &mdash; a DNA match report is awaited &mdash; that Shraddha was murdered and that she was killed by Aaftab Poonawala, they have even said 80% of their investigation is over.&rdquo; The alleged disclosure statements may be of little importance in a court of law, he added.
Seasoned cops also said the statement of the doctor who treated Aaftab&rsquo;s hand injuries could have been a crucial breakthrough and shouldn&rsquo;t have been made public before completing the investigation. Police also shouldn&rsquo;t be looking for body parts with cameras surrounding them, they said.
Initially, police even left the window and curtains of Aaftab&rsquo;s rented house in Chhatarpur Pahadi open, providing a glimpse into the crime scene. Similarly, barricades were placed only a day after Aaftab was taken to the Mehrauli forest, said a source.
&ldquo;After a mockery was made of the investigation in the first three days, it was a rap from higher-ups that led local cops to tread carefully,&rdquo; said an official privy to the developments. Sources at Police Headquarters said top cop Sanjay Arora was now closely monitoring the developments and had tightened the noose on the police station staff. Action will be taken against erring and negligent officials, he added. Even two weeks after the murder came to fore, police are still banking on a DNA match and some technical details gathered during the probe.
