Her nearest rival was None of the Above (NOTA) with 12,806 votes. Latke, the widow of late Shiv Sena MLA Ramesh Latke, whose death necessitated the bypoll, secured 3,757 more votes than her husband did in 2019. The voter turnout was low at 38% and the total votes cast were 86,570.
Latke said the high number of NOTA votes were of the BJP. “Had the BJP contested the elections it would have secured that many votes,” she said.
She said if the BJP had real sympathy for her it would never have put up a candidate. “They withdrew after they realised they would not win the bye-election,” she said.
The counting was held in 19 rounds. Latke led from the start. The six independents secured votes ranging from 624 for Milind Kamble to 1,571 for Rajesh Tripathi.
