New Delhi:&nbsp;The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has approved Mumbai International Airport Ltd&rsquo;s (MIAL) plan to have a variable tariff plan (VTP) for scheduled airlines starting new international routes.
Accordingly, starting December 1 this year, the Adani Group-managed MIAL will charge half the usual landing charges to airlines that fly to new, unserved destinations abroad. To avail of this benefit, airlines will have to start a flight to a destination currently unserved from Mumbai by any airline already operating at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International&nbsp;Airport (CSMIA).

Such a destination should have been unserved for at least 12 months. &ldquo;For example, airline A introduces a new route from Mumbai to Male, which is currently unserved from Mumbai by any airline. VTP rates shall be applicable uniformly without any discrimination to all passenger airlines starting new international routes,&rdquo; MIAL&rsquo;s proposal to AERA sent on October 10, 2022, had said.
Air India and IndiGo, which are rapidly expanding into international markets, could be among the Indian airlines that make use of this variable pricing. Foreign airlines may also be in fray. However, starting new flights depends on slot availability (leave alone desired slot) at the highly constrained CSMIA.
