<p id="1"><em><strong>Our Safety Depends On Motorists, Say Cyclists; Demand Change In Attitude</strong></em></p>

<p id="1"><strong>New Delhi</strong>: With yet another cyclist falling prey to unsafe city roads, there was an outrage in the social media on Sunday as people demanded strict action against the offending driver.</p>
<p id="2">The incident also renewed the discussions on the safety of cyclists in the city. Netizens recalled a similar incident in April when 26-year-old Kunwar Arora, a resident of Swasthya Vihar in east Delhi, was killed after he was hit by a truck on Sardar Patel Marg. In June, a Class X student, Neelima (16), was cycling to school when she was hit by speeding pickup van. She was killed on the spot, while her friend was injured. The incident took place in Kanjhawala.</p>
<p id="3">According to Delhi Police data, 17 cyclists have been killed in road accidents in the city between January and May. The figure stood at 12 during the same period last year. This is an increase of around 42%. Cyclists <strong>TOI </strong>spoke to cited lack of awareness, absence of dedicated lanes and lack of empathy for other road users as the reasons behind cyclists being vulnerable on the city roads. Cops also claimed that a rise in the number of cyclists on roads post-Covid pandemic was also a contributing factor to the increase in accidents.</p>

<p id="3">Gaurav Wadhwa, a cyclist, said none of the roads in Delhi were safe for cyclists. &ldquo;We wear a proper safety gear and always ride on the left side of the road, but our safety depends on motorists. This incident has shaken me,&rdquo; he said.</p>

<p id="2">Many cyclists highlighted the road-user conflict, which, they said, was created because governments failed to provide a safe, segregated space for cyclists even though they encouraged citizen to use bicycles. They said the mindset of other vehicle users towards cyclists and pedestrians needed to change.</p>
<p id="3">Sarika Panda, a cyclist, said she met Subhendu Banerjee &mdash; the victim in Sunday&rsquo;s incident &mdash; recently at an event organised to remember road crash victims. &ldquo;Cyclists aren&rsquo;t safe anywhere in the country. In some areas where cycle tracks have actually been created, they are encroached upon. We are not focusing on the safety of cyclists. It is high time we not only consider building more roads but also focus on safety,&rdquo; she said. Another cyclist said that Banerjee was veteran cyclist and was role model for many. He was passionate about cycling and there was never a day when he missed cycling.</p>
