New Delhi: The water crisis being faced by residents of Vasant Kunj in south Delhi is likely to end soon. A damaged portion of the main water line in the area has been replaced, said Delhi Jal Board (DJB) officials.
&ldquo;On Tuesday evening, we located a significant damage to the main water supply line deep beneath the road just near the affected residential pockets. The damaged pipeline has been replaced and the leakage of water fixed. Residents of the area will get better water supply by Thursday,&rdquo; said Bhupesh Patel, additional chief engineer, DJB.
For around a week, residents of several blocks like D6, C6, C8 and C9 of Vasant Kunj had been getting no water supply in their houses and were staging protests.
DJB officials said that when the water supply problem was first reported to them by the residents, they did a survey of the underground reservoirs for these colonies.
&ldquo;Wherever the level was less than normal, extra pumping sets were installed to push the water to these areas, which are at the tail end of the supply chain. But even after installing the extra pumps, the scarcity of drinking water continued as the water was not reaching&nbsp;these UGRs and getting lost somewhere en route. DJB then did a fresh survey with a bigger team of 30 officials and found the leak, which was around five feet under the road,&rdquo; explained an official.
&ldquo;Around 9 pm on Tuesday, the damaged portion of 6-7 metres in length was located by our team. We saw the water being wasted. Instead of reaching the UGR, it was ending up in a nearby drain. The work to replace the portion was started immediately and it continued through the night. The leakage has been fixed now,&rdquo; added Patel.
The damaged portion of the main water line was located just before the T-junction near the affected areas, so the supply after that point was compromised.
Residents were upbeat about the prospect of proper water supply from Thursday. &ldquo;We are happy that effort is being put in by DJB to fix our water supply problem. We have been calling tankers but that was not proving to be enough. Hopefully, we will get a normal supply of water soon,&rdquo; said Mausami Bhattacharya, president of the Vasant Kunj residents&rsquo; welfare association.
Earlier, DJB vice-chairman Saurabh Bharadwaj also visited Vasant Kunj areas and took stock of the progress made in solving the issues.
