What's an Aural Hematoma and how to take care of it? If your dog shakes his head and cars excessively, due to a problem on the inside, he may develop a hematoma. A hematoma is a result of a blood vessel breaking in the earflap. A hematoma will cause the pinna to appear very thick and spongy. It may occur in the entire ear or only in one area.&nbsp;Dogs usually respond to irritations in the ear canal by scratching or shaking its head. Excessive or violent shaking may cause blood vessels to break, and result in bleeding into the space between the ear cartilage and skin on the inner surface of the ear. Most dogs having an infection, allergy&nbsp;bite wound or an inflammatory ear condition might develop an aural hematoma due to excessive scratching and head shaking.&nbsp;Sometimes, a piece of foreign material lodged in the ear canal, such as a tick or piece of grass may cause shaking and scratching too.
SYMPTOMS
If your dog develops a hematoma, the pinna will appear very thick and spongy. It may occur in the entire ear or only in one area. It will cause his earflap to swell noticeably and&nbsp;feel hot to the touch.&nbsp;
PREVENTION AND TREATMENT 
A hematoma is painful and although it will heal on its own, it is wise to take your dog to the vet. Your vet can lance the area to relieve the pressure and let the healing begin. The surgery may also prevent ridging and scarring on the earflap, which may result if you let the hematoma heal on its own. Ear problems, especially infections, in dogs can be hard to eradicate but usually because people are not good at following the treatment procedure. In case of an infection&nbsp;your veterinarian may prescribe medication and will recommend a recheck of the ear canal so they can be sure that the infection is resolved.&nbsp;Otherwise, it is likely that another hematoma may occur.
Sometimes ear infections require several visits to the vet, and a change of medication. It is very important to ensure that you follow your vet's recommendations and continue to bring your dog in for check-ups until the problem is completely eliminated.
