New Delhi: Delhi Police&rsquo;s Special Cell has arrested a man who had allegedly attacked and snatched the service pistol of a head constable during the northeast Delhi riots in 2020.
The victim cop, head constable Chhetrapal, who was assaulted by the accused and his associates, had sustained serious injuries and is still in persistent vegetative state. His colleague, Ratan Lal, had died in the melee.
In a related operation, the Special Cell arrested three shooters allegedly involved in the case of firing at the RSS office in East Delhi last year. Investigation has revealed that same set of shooters had fired upon the house of a BJP functionary in Amroha, UP, DCP (Special Cell) Pramod Kushwaha said.
&ldquo;The shooters are members of the Irfan-Chhenu gang of&nbsp;northeast Delhi. They have been identified as Sameer (24), Suhail Chaudhary (22) and Shahnawaj (25),&rdquo; Kushwaha added.
The arrests were made by a team led by inspectors Ravinder Tyagi and Ajeet Singh.
According to police, they first caught hold of Shahnawaj and Chaudhary, a shooter from Jafrabad-Seelampur road. A pistol of .30 bore with four live cartridges, one single shot pistol and four live cartridges of eight mm were recovered from their possession. On their instance, Sameer, from Maujpur, was arrested along with two single-shot pistols and seven live cartridges. Shahid was nabbed later.
&ldquo;During questioning, Shahid confessed that he was part of anti-CAA-NRC protest in northeast Delhi. On February 24, 2020, he along with his associates, also participated in a protest that blocked the Wazirabad road, resulting in riots there. In this riot, he joined the other rioters and attacked policemen on duty,&rdquo; the DCP said.
Shahid&rsquo;s father, Jishan, is also a notorious criminal and presently lodged in jail in Amroha.
The other accused have revealed that they are members of the Chhenu gang. On the instructions of their gang head, they have been carrying out extortion activities from businessmen and transporters of Trans-Yamuna. Last month, they also fired at the house of a property dealer.
Sameer was involved in firing incidents at the RSS office in Shakarpur last year and at the house of a BJP leader in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. Chaudhary was involved in four cases, whereas Shahnawaj has been part of the gang for two years, cops said.
