PART 1
GET THE RIGHT GEAR
Get started with our kit bag essentials for landscape photography
There's a whole host of equipment and tools designed to make your life easier when you're out taking scenic shots.
Here, we list our favourite gadgets and core kit that any budding landscape photographer should consider. Don't worry if you're on a super-tight budget; much of the equipment here is desirable but not essential. We'd recommend starting with an entry-level DSLR or mirrorless camera with a kit lens and an affordable tripod, though if your budget stretches it would be worth picking up a set of affordable filters, too.
For tighter budgets, it's worth noting that the second-hand market can be a great place to pick up a bargain and save some money on a camera body or lens, too. You can then slowly build up your landscapes kit bag with some of these other items over time when you have the funds.
PRO TRIPODS FROM £150/$220
A tripod is a must-have for any landscape photographer, allowing you to take your time when composing and shoot long exposures with an extended shutter speed to blur moving elements like people, clouds or water. Look for a professional model with a decent maximum height and adjustable leg angles (braced legs are for video). Travel varieties are also a great option if you like to pack light.
CREATIVE CAMERA FROM £350/$400
Entry-level DSLR and mirrorless models are perfect for landscapes, as you often don't need the latest features that come with the more premium models, such as fast burst rates. An APS-C or full-frame sensor is ideal for landscapes, though more megapixels will make it easier to crop and recompose when editing. 4K video options can also be desirable if you plan to shoot video.
FILTERS FROM £30/$25
