STAY ON TOP OF SEO
Digital Photographer|Issue 264
As photographers, there are many ways we can attract new clients, including word of mouth, advertising and, of course, social media.
STAY ON TOP OF SEO

However, one area that often gets overlooked is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) – the process of maximising the content on our websites so that it appears higher up in search engine results and can therefore be seen by a wider audience.

For example, if you are a professional wedding photographer and a potential client does a search for a wedding photographer in your area, you’d like them to see your name first and book your services. But if your website isn’t well-optimised, they’ll probably see someone else’s name above yours.

Perhaps you’re a photographer who regularly writes blog posts and you want to ensure that they get picked up by visitors to Google to direct traffic to your site. How can you make sure you’re creating photography content that people are looking for?

Over the next few pages, we’ll explore five ways to boost your SEO. What’s exciting, but also frustrating, is that the best practices for keeping on top of Google constantly change and evolve. To keep up with algorithm updates and get the latest information, visit Google’s developer website (https://developers. google.com/search/updates/ranking). For now, let’s focus on the present. This is by no means an exhaustive guide to SEO but it’s a good place to start.

Make your site mobile-friendly

With more of us now accessing Google on a smartphone rather than a desktop, it’s vital that your site is responsive to mobile devices, so the layout automatically adapts to different screen sizes. Firstly, viewers have little patience for a site where they have to keep scrolling and zooming to find what they need.
