Loading up this latest TMNT brawler is like travelling back in time to play Turtles In Time, only to realise that when you first played it you forgot your glasses and were using a sticky controller. Shredder's Revenge doesn't just succeed in replicating what we loved about its predecessors, it lovingly improves on those foundations in just about every way.
Not only does it have the beloved retro turtle brawler as its ancestor, it shares DNA with some of the genre's best revivals. Publisher Dotemu released Streets Of Rage 4 in 2020, and some staff at developer Tribute Games worked on 2010's Scott Pilgrim game. Like those games, Shredder's Revenge boasts modern bells and whistles, the story mode having plenty of checkpoints, an overworld map, and generous lives (they refill to a maximum for each level); a lightweight XP system unlocks more moves as you progress; and, of course, online play is present as well as couch co-op. It's vital if you want to make use of the six-player mode that turns the game into a delightfully chaotic mess of pixel art.
