Vivekananda Way

At Calcutta

On his arrival in Calcutta, Swami Vivekananda was greeted with intense enthusiasm, and his progress through the decorated streets of the city was thronged with an immense crowd waiting to have a sight of him. He was given a grand Address of Welcome.

1.0 Introductory remarks in response to the Address of Welcome

1. Swami Vivekananda began the reply to the Address of Welcome at Calcutta by first sharing with the crowd that he was, first and foremost, a Calcutta boy who had spent his childhood in the city.

2. He also restated his enormous love and regard for his motherland.

3. Further, he gently pointed out to the crowd that there was no need to continue thanking the organizers of the Parliament of Religions.

4. On the other hand, Swami Vivekananda said that thanks were due to the American people, who treated him most kindly and wonderfully.

Series 5: Understanding India - through Swami Vivekananda's eyes

Thus far, we have covered 15 out of the 29 lectures that Swami Vivekananda delivered from Colombo to Almora (January 1897- March 1901).

In this issue, we cover the lecture titled, "Address of Welcome presented at Calcutta and Reply".

I was asked by an English friend on the eve of my departure, "Swami, how do you like now your motherland after four years' experience of the luxurious, glorious, powerful West?" I could only answer, "India I loved before I came away. Now the very dust of India has become holy to me, the very air is now to me holy; it is now the holy land, the place of pilgrimage, the Tirtha."

1. He also spoke appreciatively about the warm-heartedness and hospitality of the American nation, where, more than anywhere else, the feeling of brotherhood had been developed.
