Himalayan glaciers melting 65% faster than previous decade

Himalayan glaciers providing critical water to nearly two billion people are melting faster than ever before due to climate change, exposing communities to unpredictable and costly disasters, scientists have warned

The glaciers disappeared 65% faster from 2011 to 2020 compared with the previous decade, according to a report by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development. As it gets warmer, ice will melt, that was expected, but what is unexpected and very worrying is the speed. This is going much faster than we thought. 

The same group published a report in 2019, which found that even in the most optimistic case, where average global warming was limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial temperatures, the region would lose at least one third of its glaciers. The group's updated report shows those projections have since worsened.
