GIRIPREMI'S HISTORIC TRIUMPH ON

In an unparalleled achievement, Giripremi, India’s premier mountaineering club, in collaboration with the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi, has etched their names in history by becoming the first Indian group to conquer

Mt. Meru, a towering 6,660-meter peak in the challenging Garhwal Himalayas. This remarkable feat not only marks the first successful Indian expedition to Mt. Meru (South) but also the world’s first successful ascent via the West Face. Giripremi’s mountaineers Ganesh More, Vivek

Shivade, Varun Bhagwat, Mingma Sherpa, Vinod Gusain (senior instructor, NIM), and their colleagues Bihari Rana and Ajit Rawat, proudly raised the Indian tricolor at the summit of Mt. Meru on September 2, 2023, at approximately 8 am.

The expedition was led by veteran mountaineer Umesh Zirpe, with additional climbers Dawa Sherpa and Furtensing Sherpa joining the Giripremi team, while Lakpa Sherpa supported the expedition up to Camp 1.

Uttarkashi’s Nehru Institute of Mountaineering played a pivotal role in supporting the expedition, with guidance from Col. Anshuman Bhadoria, Principal, NIM, and Dr. Major Deval Vajapayee, Vice Principal, NIM. Parth Chaudhari of P Cube Enterprises, Parimal and Pramod Chaudhari of Praj Industries, along with World Oilfield Machines (WOM) and Namah Ropes, provided crucial support for this historic endeavor.

The Giripremi team had previously attempted Mt. Meru from the West face in May but was forced to turn back just 200 meters from the summit due to extreme weather conditions. This initial experience proved invaluable, helping them better prepare and overcome the challenges faced during their successful expedition.
