The 28-year-old - who has seven goals and six assists this term - suffered a hamstring problem during last month’s victory over Reading but was forced to remain on the pitch as the Bluebirds had used all their substitutes.
Initial scans suggested he would be out until after the international break but Cardiff boss Sabri Lamouchi says that prognosis has proved optimistic.
“I’m worried and afraid he will be out until the end of the season,” said the former Nottingham Forest manager, who replaced Mark Hudson at the end of January.
