END OF CUP ROAD FOR EFL BATTLERS

Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke and Preston flew the flag for the Football League and all gave a decent account of themselves.

Wednesday held Premier League side Brentford to a 1-1 draw in the capital – Djeidi Gassama’s superb 25-yard strike shortly before the hour cancelling out Kevin Schade’s first half opener for the Bees – but then lost 5-4 on penalties.

The first nine penalties were scored before Mark Flekken saved from the unfortunate Liam Palmer to clinch victory for Brentford.
