HARROGATE Town defender Anthony O’Connor admits he still has a “point to prove” to Blackburn Rovers as he plots to knock his old club out of the Carabao Cup for a second time in three seasons.
O’Connor left Ireland at the age of 16 to join Rovers and, despite being handed three professional contracts during seven years on the Ewood Park books, was never handed a senior outing.
Impressive loan spells at Burton, Torquay and Plymouth alleviated some of the frustration as O’Connor waited for a chance at his parent club but the Corkborn centre-back, who eventually left for the latter in March 2015, insists he could have had a long career for the former Premier League champions had he been given an opportunity.
O’Connor enjoyed a triumphant return to Blackburn when he put the shackles on Chile international and current Villarreal striker Ben Brereton Diaz during a 2-1 victory with Morecambe in 2021.
