The biggest tally came at Harrogate, where visitors Accrington Stanley ran out 5-3 victors in Northern Group C. Korede Adedoyin led the way with a hat-trick for Stanley, while Lewis Trickett helped himself to a double. Sam Folarin (two) and Joe Mattock were on target for Town.

The win puts Accrington top of the group with one match to go. In the other tie in Group C, Josh Powell and Ben Perry netted as Nottingham Forest U21s ran out 2-0 winners at Carlisle.

Kylian Kouassi was the star of the show with a hat-trick as Blackpool romped to a 5-2 home triumph against Liverpool U21s in Northern Group A. Albie Morgan and Andy Lyons also got on the scoresheet for the group leaders. Paul Glatzel and Mateusz Musialowski replied for the young Reds.

Seasiders boss Neil Critchley said: "It's brilliant for Kylian Kouassi to score a hat-trick, it's brilliant for us to score some goals, it's much-needed minutes for some players and, touch wood, there's no injuries. It's been a successful evening."

In the group's other game, Morecambe ran out comfortable 3-1 winners against Barrow. Charlie Brown, Cameron Rooney and Cammy Smith struck for the Shrimps. Barrow's Ben Whitfield notched a consolation.

League One pacesetters Portsmouth dished out a 5-1 drubbing to fourth tier Gillingham in Southern Group E. Tino Anjorin, Ben Stevenson, Kusini Yengi, Abu Kamara and Ryley Towler all got in on the act for Pompey, Jonny Williams replying for the Gills on the stroke of half-time.

Portsmouth-who scored four times in the second half lead the way in the group with five points, two ahead of the Gills with a match still to play.

Blues boss John Mousinho said: "It was a pretty emphatic second half after what was a poor first one - we just weren't at the races.

"But for everything that we got wrong before the break, we then got right after it. Credit to the players for that.
