Former Wycombe, Wolves and Newcastle defender Williamson, 39, has spent the last four years as player-manager at Gateshead.
He led the Tynesiders to the National League North title in 2021-22 and has quickly built a reputation as one of the most progressive managers in Non-League.
Gateshead sat sixth in the National League at the time of his departure and have averaged 62 per cent possession this season - more than any other side in the division.
No-brainer
"It was a very tough decision to leave Gateshead but when a club like this comes in, it's a no-brainer," said Williamson, who made 134 Premier League appearances for the Magpies.
"Everythe thing club epitomises was really attractive to me and my team.
