In the idyllic surroundings of Wormsley, John Evans led England’s Over70s cricket team to victory in the first Septuagenarian World Cup.
But his is a name that will also be familiar to supporters of a number of Non-League football sides in Gloucestershire in the 1970s and ‘80s.
Back then, the notion of him one day taking his place among a select band of English cricket World Cup winning captains, would have been dismissed as a fantasy. Now he’s achieved a sporting dream – at the age of 73.
“I was a bit of a late develop in cricketer, and you could probably say the same about my football,” he told The Non League Paper, just days after lifting the trophy in front of a healthy sun-drenched crowd at one of the world’s most picturesque sporting venues.
