One of the most significant areas of innovation has been the screen. From the original iPhone to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the screen has evolved in size, tech, and functionality. In 2024, several trends and innovations in screen tech are on the horizon.
IPHONE SCREEN SIZE
The original iPhone was released in 2007 and featured a 3.5-inch screen. This was considered a large screen size for its time, allowing for a revolutionary touchscreen interface that did away with the physical keyboards of its predecessors. The iPhone’s screen size remained 3.5 inches until the release of the iPhone 5 in 2012, which introduced a slightly larger 4-inch screen. This change responded to the increasing demand for more screen real estate, allowing users to consume media and navigate apps more comfortably.
The trend of increasing screen sizes continued with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in 2014, which featured 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays, respectively. These models catered to a market increasingly interested in larger screens, partly driven by the growing popularity of media consumption on mobile devices. Subsequent models like the iPhone X in 2017 further pushed boundaries with its 5.8-inch display and the introduction of OLED technology, offering better contrast ratios and more vibrant colors. Fast forward to 2023, and the iPhone 15 lineup showcases screen sizes ranging from 6.1 inches for the standard model to 6.7 inches for the Pro Max version. This progression reflects a clear trend toward larger screens, aligning with consumer preferences for more immersive experiences, particularly in gaming, video streaming, and multitasking - and yet, some consumers want larger screen sizes again.
