He’s the mastermind behind Kiwi rock anthems such as Dominion Road and Anchor Me, but Don McGlashan says it’s the things that have come later in life that have brought him the most joy.
“I look into my own background and remember times when there was nothing steady,” refl ects Don, 64. “The kids needed to eat and the mortgage needed to be paid, and there was nothing to rely on. I can remember times of great anxiety and just hoping stuff would turn up, and trying to make that happen.”
Now Don splits his time between Vancouver, Canada – where he lives with his second wife Ann McDonell – and New Zealand, where he’s about to tour his music around the country, and visit family, including children Louie, 31, and Moe, 28.
When the Weekly chats to Don over Zoom, he’s getting ready to head to his home in Auckland and prepare for his Take it to the Bridge tour, which runs from late August through to October.
The tour showcases songs from his latest album, Bright November Morning, released in 2022, but has a theme all of its own.
