Create the ultimate SUMMER SANCTUARY

Want to keep that holiday vibe going at home? Create your own personal zen zone using these clever designs and techniques
Create the ultimate SUMMER SANCTUARY

We’re a nation that loves to venture outdoors to play and entertain. Done well, an outdoor area can serve as an entertaining area, a second living room and an ultimate zen zone. They’re also a great mood-setter, giving you an instant holiday vibe and reset from everyday life. Here’s what to consider when designing your cool summer sanctuary to retreat from the chaos of life.

PLANNING

Most likely, your sanctuary will be heavily impacted by the “B” word: budget. To create a low-cost haven, work with what you’ve got. Ideally, the area will have shelter from the wind and be located on the western side of your property to maximise the setting sun, and have enough space to fit the outdoor furniture of your choice.

STYLE

While some interior experts advise opting for a style that echoes your interior, we say: do what makes you happy! If you’ve exercised restraint in your interiors, why not let your sanctuary shine? If you’ve always wanted a tranquil Balinese garden, go for it! If your heart desires an eclectic mix of colours, go right ahead! Allow yourself to get creative when designing your space. If you’re unsure of what style you prefer, create a mood board before you begin. For a soothing sanctuary, a colour palette of muted hues sets a tranquil tone and delivers a sense of calm.

Tip

To create the ultimate chill-out zone, hang a hammock between two sturdy trees. Afternoon naps have never looked so luxe!
