It was meant to be a special occasion in which the late Princess Diana’s sons paid tribute to their beloved mum and her legacy of love and kindness.
But instead of putting their differences aside, at least for one night, Princes William and Harry revealed the extent of their rift by refusing to be in the same place at the same time – even virtually – at an event hosted by charity The Diana Award.
Their mother would have been deeply upset and even angry with her boys, say royal insiders.
“She would have banged their heads together,” says one. “She wouldn’t have put up with it.”
Royal correspondent Emily Ferguson says it’s a “sad state of affairs” that the brothers could not come together to pay tribute to Diana. “They’re clearly both intent on keeping her memory alive and honouring her legacy, but perhaps the best thing they could do is end their feud.”
William, 41, and Harry, 39, were guests of honour for the event, at which awards were presented to 20 exceptional young leaders in memory of Diana. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the awards and both brothers – who have jointly presented them in the past – were said to be keen to be involved.
